What’s Trending in Type

By Erin Neisewander - eGuide Digital Manager

I don’t know about you, but I love fonts and typography. There are so many fonts to choose from it’s really an endless supply of creativity. Different fonts and font trends seem to pop up each year and a lot of the times they coincide with Graphic Design trends. This year we are expecting to see everything from Art Deco Revival to Edgy and Futuristic.

Art Deco Revival

Here we are again, the roaring twenties! While I was ready to don my flapper dress and pearls I guess I will settle for the Art Deco Revival that is sweeping the typography, design and branding world.

Art deco fonts are traditionally Tall and sans serif exuding a sense of elegance in their every curve and ligature.

The Art Deco fonts of 2023 while mimicking their decade old counterparts are not quite the same. They still give off the high class vibe but bring in contemporary elements such as digital warping, glitches and notches out of certain letters.

Vintage Narrow Serifs/ Vintage Wavy Aesthetic

While 2022 brought more rounded and bubbly fonts, 2023 is sticking to high class skinny and sophisticated. With a certain timelessness to them Vintage Narrow Serifs are being seen used across many high fashion establishments such as burberry who dropped their long used serif fonts for a more upscale vintage look.

Going back in time again with The Vintage Wavy Aesthetic we are seeing a revival of the “Art Nouveau” look. Whimsical, just a little funky and beautifully flowing lines make this style one to try.

Y2K Fonts

Here we are with fonts that tie into the trends we are seeing in Graphic Design. Nostalgia anyone? Y2K is back and taking over the scene.

Think magazine cutout letters, the Spice Girls, MTV and all your favorite early 2000’s lo-rise jeans. These fonts are bubbly, funky and bring us back to a time that we all loved and personally lived. Did we make some terrible clothing choices like wearing a dress over jeans? Sure, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here…these fonts are fun.

Retro Looks

Groovy Baby!

Characterized by stylized ligatures, rounded edges and curves for days this trend is bringing us back to the 70’s, but not in the cheesy way you might think.

Putting a modern twist on retro, this style fonts are being used by major brands and fashion houses around the world.

Edgy and Futuristic

The 80’s have been huge the last few years and they aren't going anywhere. Stranger Things, IT, you name it the 80’s have made a big impact.

Paying an homage to 80’s futuristic cinema this style is chunkier than your average font, and looks great as a display font over a grainy backdrop. Think Star wars propaganda poster or a sci-fi flic from the late 60’s. 2001: A Space Oddity anyone?

Are we seeing a trend here? Nostalgia seems to be the big winner this year and I for one am here for it.
