V2MOM: Why Values Matter

There are many ‘right’ ways to get where we want to go. That’s why you NEED to be clear on your values if you want to get to your vision.

My clients often have a Vision and want to talk about their Methods. Much of my work involves slowing down and allowing space for a real conversation about Values. The conversation tends to look like this:

“I want *enter Vision here*. I’ve thought about these options, *enter Methods here*. Which one should I go with?”

“I can tell you what I would do in this situation… but I’m not you.”

“Okay, well in your experience with other businesses like mine, what’s the best option out of these *reiterate potential Methods here*.”

“I can tell you what worked for other businesses… but they aren’t you.”

“Okay, but I don’t know how I should do this. That’s what I hired you for.”

“Good. Let’s talk about your why. What do you care about that makes you love the work you do? What type of presence do you like to bring into the world? What are your core Values?”

“I’m not sure yet…”

I love this part.

(Coaching wonderful people on their Values aligns with my core value of Clarity… But I’m getting ahead of myself.)

Let’s look at how values guide us from our Vision to our Methods:

Vision: Develop Passive Income via Online Offerings.

Values: IDK.

Method #1: Create an online community with paid membership tiers.

Method #2: Create an online course version of my services.

Method #3: Publish an e-book.

My client wants to know: What’s the BEST option? My answer: The one that aligns with your values.

Here are some Values my client might have. I organized them into groups according to which Method these Values could support:

Community, Interconnectedness, Connection → Method #1

Education, Information, Knowledge Sharing → Method #2

Legacy, Voice, Story, Narrative → Method #3

When you take the time to get clear on your Values FIRST, it will be easy to choose between great options. Your path forward will become more clear. But that’s not all folks…

Here’s the REAL KICKER: You are going to face Obstacles along your way - I guarantee it! When those Obstacles arise, you better believe that you will need to lean on your Values to push through. All of these methods will be difficult, so you’ll benefit from choosing the one that aligns with the things you care about most.

Keep it simple. Keep it real. Keep it tuned in to the eGuide Blog at all times.
